Open positions: 4 PhD scholarships
Centre of Mathematics for Applications (CMA) is funded as a 'Centre of Excellence' by the Research Council of Norway. Read more
about CMA here.
We hereby invite applications
for 4 PhD scholarships (Ref.nr. 2008 / 7709)
- All positions are available from July 1, 2008, but the start
date may be delayed if necessary.
- Applications with all necessary enclosures must be received
by June 15, 2008
The main vision of CMA is to create a national research centre
in mathematics where top class scientists from different areas can
work together with a joint perspective and common goals. The main
focus is on mathematics motivated from applications, with emphasis
on problems arising from modern scientific computing. The activity
in the centre is built upon 4 different research areas: geometry,
stochastic analysis, differential equations and applications in
the physical sciences (mainly within astrophysics and computational
quantum mechanics). The centre specifically focuses on research
activities on the boundaries and intersections of these areas.
Position #1 and 2
These positions will be granted for a period of 3 years. Applicants
will be evaluated and ranked with respect to the research plan of
the centre. Whoever is employed must demonstrate their scientific
competence within mathematics or a related applied area. Preference
will be given to applicants with experience of computational problems
within the relevant areas, or with experience in problems that combine
aspects from two or more of the areas.
The full research plan can be found here
Position #3
will also be granted for a period of 3 years. This specific position is tied to a project granted by the Research Council of Norway through the PETROMAX-programme, entitled "Reservoir Monitoring and Dynamic Reservoir Characterization with Production, Seismic, and Electromagnetic Data". Whoever is employed will work on numerical methods for the Maxwell equations, motivated by challenges occuring in the oil industry. Otherwise, criteria and conditions are equal to those of position 1 and 2.
Position #4
will be granted for a period of 4 years, including 25% teaching duties. The candidate will be employed by the Department of mathematics, but still work at the CMA. Applicants
will be evaluated and ranked with respect to those parts of CMA's research plan that are overlapping with the activity of the department, i.e., geomtery, stochastic analysis, or PDEs. Otherwise, criteria and conditions are equal to those of position 1 and 2.
All positions
Applications must include complete information about education at both bachelor and master level, and documented scientific experience. All employees must satisfy the entrance requirements for the doctoral degree programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Women are especially encouraged to apply.
