Open position: 1 PhD grant
Centre of Mathematics for Applications (CMA) is funded as a 'Centre of Excellence' by the Research Council of Norway.

about CMA here.
We hereby invite applications
for a PhD grant
The position is tied to a specific project, granted by the Research Council of Norway through the PETROMAX-programme, entitled "Reservoir Monitoring and Dynamic Reservoir Characterization with Production, Seismic, and Electromagnetic Data". The project aims at making significant contributions to the advancement of the technology supporting the emerging field of numerical methods for electromagnetic scattering in petroleum reservoirs. The electric/magnetic fields, observed at the sea bottom and in wells, is transformed into distributions of electrical conductivities in the reservoir by numerical inversion. The project will address some of the underlying mathematical and technological problems that limit the use of all available data for model inversion. Particular emphasis is given to development of numerically stable and efficient algorithms.
The candidate hired for this position will especially be working with
- numerical methods on non-orthogonal grids for Maxwell's equations,
- increased flexibility in model geometry,
- fast linear solver for the discrete equations, and
- computer programming.
The project is collaboration between CMA and Centre for Integrated Petroleum Research (CIPR) at Univerity of Bergen. The specific position is tied to a project where Prof. Ragnar Winther and Adjunct Professor Trond Mannseth are principle investigators. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with a post. doc. at CMA focusing mainly on analysis and development of numerical techniques for modeling of electromagnetic signals.
We seek a candidate with scientific background within one or more of these areas:
- Numerical analysis
- Partial differential equations
- Electromagnetic modeling
Formalities
- The position is available from March 1, 2008, but the start date may be delayed if necessary.
- Applications with all necessary enclosures must be received
by February 1, 2008
- The position will be granted for a period of 3 years.
Applications must include complete information
about education at both bachelor and master level, and documented
scientific experience. All employees must satisfy the entrance requirements
for the doctoral degree programme at the Faculty of Mathematics
and Natural Sciences. Women are especially encouraged to apply.
