Centre of Mathematics for Applications (CMA) was recently funded
as a 'Centre of Excellence' by the Research Council of Norway. CMA
is one of three such centres at the University of Oslo.
The departments of Informatics, Mathematics, Physics and the Institute
of Theoretical Astrophysics are involved, with collaboration from
SINTEF Applied Mathematics. There will also be centre members from
the universities in Bergen and Trondheim. Read more about CMA here.
We hereby invite applications
for a full position as Professor
(Full Norwegian text can be found here.)
- The position is available from 1 January 2004, but the start

will be managed by one of the four cooperating departments, depending
on the academic profile of the candidate who is hired. If the Centre
is terminated, the position will be transferred to this department.
The main vision of CMA is to create a national
research centre in mathematics where top class scientists from different
areas can work together with a joint perspective and common goals.
The main focus will be on mathematics motivated from applications,
with emphasis on problems arising from modern scientific computing.
The activity in the centre will be built upon 4 different research
areas: geometry, stochastic analysis, differential equations and
applications in the physical sciences (mainly within astrophysics
and computational quantum mechanics). In particular, the centre
will focus on research activities that combine two or more of these
areas.
Whoever is employed must be prepared to take part in the teaching
at all levels, from beginning calculus to PhD- and Postdoc-supervision.
Applications must include complete information about education,
former positions, and scientific, teaching and administrative experience
(documented). Within the closing date, applicants must submit 4
- four - copies of:
- Applicaton, CV, and enclosures,
- Scientific papers, to which the applicant wants the committee
to pay spesial attention (Note: The number of such papers should
not exceed 10), and a statement discussing the selection of these.
- Full list of publications,
- A statement upon / documentation of pedagogical competence,
public outreach, and other relevant qualifications.
Scientific papers which are not completed at the closing date for
applications, may be delivered within 4 weeks thereafter if this
is explicitly stated in the official application.
Applicants must hold a PhD or document similar qualifications (Minimum
requirement for all permanent scientific positions at UiO).
Applicants will be evaluated and ranked with respect to the research
plan of the centre. Whoever is employed must demonstrate scientific
qualifications within the four research areas of the centre. Preference
will be given to applicants with a research profile matching the
core activity of the centre, and/or with experience in problems
that combine aspects from two or more of the areas.
The full research plan of the centre can be found here.
The main emphasis of the evaluation and ranking will be based on
the selected scientific papers. Research leadership and participation
in research projects will also be considered if the activities are
sufficiently documented. Finally, documented pedagogical competence,
public outreach, and other relevant qualifications will be brought
into consideration.
Women are especially encouraged to apply.
